Moonriver 404 Reference Review: A Natural, Engaging Hi-Fi Experience
If you’re looking for a place to truly understand what Moonriver is about, the 404 Reference integrated amplifier is where I’d start.
Why the Moonriver 404 Reference Stands Out
This is the model that, in my experience, captures the essence of the brand. It has that distinctive Moonriver character—natural, composed, and deeply engaging—but with enough authority and current to comfortably drive a wide range of speakers. On paper, it may not shout about power, but in a real system, it feels confident, controlled, and far more capable than the specs suggest.
What keeps drawing me back to it is the way it presents music. There’s a flow to everything it does—nothing feels forced or highlighted, yet detail, texture, and timing all come through in a very cohesive way. Vocals feel present and believable, the top end remains smooth and extended, and the overall balance makes it incredibly easy to listen to for hours.
It’s also one of those rare pieces that you don’t feel the need to constantly tweak around. You can build a system with it, sit back, and simply enjoy the result—which, ultimately, is what this hobby should be about.
My Thoughts
There’s something about Moonriver that connected with me straight away—and it wasn’t just the sound.
The aesthetic plays a big part. That darker, understated finish, paired with those beautifully tactile dials and switches, gives it a real sense of purpose. It feels like a piece of equipment you want to interact with, not just operate.
On paper, the power output might seem modest—but in practice, it’s anything but. The 404 Reference has a grip and current delivery that lets it drive a wide range of speakers with confidence. It never feels strained, just composed and assured.
What really stayed with me, though, is the way it presents music. It’s engaging in a way that pulls you in without trying too hard—natural, immersive, and genuinely enjoyable over long listening sessions.
When I first received my 404 Reference, I intended to bring it into the shop fairly quickly. That didn’t happen. It stayed at home for six months because I simply didn’t want to part with it—I was enjoying it too much in my own system.
For me, that says everything.
This is an exceptional amplifier, and when you consider the performance on offer, it represents serious value. If it carried a more widely recognised name, I have no doubt it would be priced at least twice as high.

Moonriver 404 Reference Integrated Amplifier

The Moonriver 404 Reference Integrated Amplifier is really where Moonriver starts to make complete sense to me—the core of the range, and the point where the brand truly reveals what it’s about.
There’s a purity to the fully analogue design that comes through immediately. It’s not trying to impress with complexity or features; instead, it leans on well-chosen, refined components and a design philosophy built around long-term listening. The kind of amplifier you can live with, not just evaluate.
What I hear is a naturalness that’s hard to walk away from. Vocals sit exactly where they should—present, textured, and believable. The top end is smooth and extended without ever becoming fatiguing, and there’s a sense of flow to the music that keeps everything connected. Nothing feels forced or spotlighted—it just unfolds in a very cohesive, engaging way.
It’s the kind of presentation that doesn’t demand attention, but quietly earns it over time.
Moonriver 505 Phono Pre-Amplifier

At the recent hi-fi show in Melbourne, I chose to run the Moonriver 505 Phono Pre-Amplifier as the backbone of my vinyl presentation—and it proved to be an inspired decision.
We began with an already exceptional cartridge mounted on the Helix turntable, and the system sounded excellent. But when we stepped up to the Air Tight Opus 1, something quite telling happened. Every improvement you’d expect from a cartridge at that level came through—clearly, effortlessly, and without hesitation.
What really stood out to me was how the 505 handled that jump in performance. It didn’t compress or limit the system in any way. Instead, it revealed everything that was available—more detail, deeper bass, a stronger sense of space and authority. It allowed the system to scale naturally, which isn’t always a given at this level.
Importantly, it never felt like a bottleneck. If anything, it elevated the entire presentation, adding a sense of ease and musical coherence that made the whole system more engaging.
For a phono stage at this price point, that kind of performance – and that ability to step up alongside truly high-end components is something I don’t take lightly.

If you haven’t come across Moonriver before, it’s well worth taking the time to experience it properly.
It’s not a brand that tries to grab your attention in the first few minutes—instead, it reveals itself, drawing you in with a sound that feels natural, balanced, and easy to live with. The longer you spend with it, the more it makes sense.
That’s really where its strength lies. It’s not about quick impressions, it’s about long-term enjoyment – systems you can sit with for hours and simply enjoy the music.
If that approach resonates with you, we’d genuinely encourage you to explore it.
