Description

ADS Drive System

The ADS design includes two pure analog frequency generators featuring low distortion and noise; a high current Class-A/B amplifier that is transformer-coupled to the turntable output; analog control logic for low noise operation; 33/45 RPM analog speed adjustment controls with center detent positions that are factory calibrated. Created by our previous Director of Electrical Engineering, Michael Bettinger.

Operational Features

The ADS includes a lighted power on/off switch allowing it to remain powered up during listening sessions for the oscillators to remain warmed up for lowest distortion. There is a separate run/stop switch to control the motor operation. The ADS also utilizes separate 60 Hz and 81 Hz oscillators to eliminate unnecessary switching circuitry in the oscillator circuits for long term speed stability and low oscillator distortion. Turntable speed is chosen using a switch located between the 33 RPM and 45 RPM speed adjustment controls; LEDs indicate the Run/Stop condition and chosen speed. Speed adjustment controls provide a center detent position that is factory calibrated to 60 and 81Hz +/- .02 Hz in their center détente position. The controls also provide fine speed adjustment of approximately 3 Hz through continuously variable linear adjustment controls. The circuitry provides a startup voltage of approximately 120VAC for 8 seconds on startup to assist quick speed ramp of heavier platters, then reduces to 92VAC for its steady state run voltage.

Speed Control and Adjustment

The front panel contains a two-position push-button switch for selecting either 33 RPM or 45 RPM operation. Pressing the switch either latches it in or releases the switch to its outward position for 33 RPM operation. There are separate speed adjustment controls for 33 and 45 RPM. The controls have a détente center position that is factory calibrated for 60 Hz (33 RPM) and 81 Hz (45 RPM). The speed is also continuously adjustable +/- 3 Hz for fine tuning of the platter speed using a stroboscopic disk and 60 HZ light source. Blue LED indicators adjacent to the controls indicate which speed is set at a glance.

Motor Stop and Run

The ADS is meant to be left powered on during the listening session. The platter is started and stopped by the front panel Run/Stop momentary push-button switch. There is an LED indicator the glows red when stopped and green when the platter is turning.

System Power

There is an IEC power module on the rear panel to supply AC power to the ADS. The IEC module contains a fuse drawer that holds a 1-amp slow blow fuse protecting the ADS from electrical system malfunctions. AC power to the ADS is controlled by the power switch located on the left-hand side of the front panel. When the ADS is powered up, the indicator in the switch glows blue indicating the internal power supplies are functioning properly.

Output to Turntable

The 125 VAC max output to the motor is supplied by the identified AC receptacle on the rear panel. The receptacle output provides a maximum 20 watts. Higher wattage loads will seriously damage the ADS.

Why Choose VPI

VPI Industries is one of America’s most respected analogue manufacturers, producing handcrafted turntables in New Jersey for more than four decades. Founded by Harry Weisfeld and now continued by the Weisfeld family, VPI has developed a loyal following worldwide through its focus on precision engineering, upgradeability, and extracting maximum musical engagement from vinyl playback.

What makes VPI particularly interesting is the way the brand combines traditional high-mass turntable engineering with genuinely innovative manufacturing techniques and tonearm design. VPI turntables are built around substantial platter systems, carefully controlled resonance management, and uniquely engineered tonearms designed to maximise cartridge performance and musical realism. The result is a presentation that feels large-scale, dynamic, and highly immersive while still preserving excellent transparency and tonal balance.

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, the Scout and Prime series stand out as particularly compelling models within the VPI range. They deliver much of the brand’s core analogue character and engineering philosophy while remaining relatively approachable within serious high-end vinyl playback. There is a sense of authority and physicality to VPI turntables that makes records sound expansive, energetic, and deeply engaging, particularly within carefully matched analogue systems.

Signature Design and Sound

Manufactured in the USA, VPI turntables incorporate several distinctive engineering approaches that help separate the brand from more conventional analogue designs. Their substantial platter assemblies, precision bearing systems, and rigid plinth structures are engineered to improve rotational stability and minimise unwanted resonance throughout the playback system.

One of the most unique aspects of modern VPI turntables is the company’s advanced 3D-printed tonearm technology. Developed to achieve complex internal structures and resonance control characteristics that are difficult to manufacture using traditional methods, the 3D-printed arms allow VPI to carefully manage energy transfer, reduce unwanted coloration, and improve cartridge tracking behaviour. The result is a tonearm that feels highly resolved, mechanically quiet, and exceptionally capable of revealing low-level musical information.

Sonically, VPI turntables are known for their scale, dynamics, and highly involving presentation. The sound feels powerful and spacious, with strong bass authority, impressive image size, and excellent separation between instruments and vocals. At the same time, VPI tables retain refinement and openness, allowing recordings to sound vivid and highly lifelike without becoming overly analytical or clinical.

VPI Product Range

The VPI range available through HeyNow Hi-Fi focuses primarily on the highly regarded Scout and Prime series turntables. These models showcase many of the brand’s most successful engineering concepts, including high-mass platter systems, precision motor assemblies, and advanced tonearm technologies capable of supporting high-performance moving coil and moving magnet cartridges.

The Scout series offers an excellent entry point into serious high-end analogue playback, delivering impressive scale, stability, and upgrade potential. Moving further into the Prime series introduces greater refinement, lower noise floors, and increasingly sophisticated isolation and tonearm technologies that allow systems to extract significantly more realism and musical detail from vinyl records.

VPI remains a highly interesting option for analogue enthusiasts seeking turntables that combine innovative engineering, substantial construction quality, and a bold, immersive sound character. At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Geoff and his analogue setup team provide careful cartridge installation, tonearm calibration, and analogue system optimisation to ensure VPI turntables perform at their full potential within each customer’s vinyl playback system.
