Mutech

Mutech by R.M Kanda is a brand of high-end, handcrafted moving-coil (MC) phono cartridges, and the "R.M Kanda Hayabusa" is a specific model of this cartridge designed by Eiji Kanda, the founder of Mutech.

Eiji Kanda was a legendary and humble audiophile craftsman who established Mutech in 2012, though he had a long history of technical cooperation and OEM production for other audio brands since 1959.

The Hayabusa cartridge is based on his groundbreaking yoke-less ring-magnet design, a concept he developed in the 1970s but could only realize with advancements in materials technology years later.

Why Choose Mutech

Mutech is a highly specialised Japanese phono cartridge manufacturer built around the analogue engineering philosophy of R.M. Kanda, one of the more respected and innovative figures in moving coil cartridge development. Best known for his yokeless ring magnet generator concepts, Kanda-san pursued cartridge designs focused on efficiency, speed, low internal impedance, and preserving the natural energy and realism of vinyl playback.

Rather than following conventional moving coil design approaches, Mutech cartridges utilise unique electromagnetic principles developed to improve signal generation efficiency and reduce magnetic resistance within the generator system itself. The result is a cartridge range that delivers exceptional openness, transient speed, and dynamic expression while maintaining tonal density and musical coherence.

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Mutech cartridges have impressed with their ability to present music with remarkable immediacy and realism. There is a vividness and β€œlive” quality to the sound that makes instruments and vocals feel highly present and physically engaging without becoming clinical or fatiguing. These cartridges perform exceptionally well within carefully matched analogue systems where setup precision, tonearm compatibility, and phono stage loading are properly optimised. Geoff and his experienced analogue setup team bring extensive real-world expertise in cartridge mounting, alignment, compliance matching, and vinyl system calibration to ensure customers achieve the full potential these highly specialised cartridges are capable of delivering.

Signature Design and Sound

Handcrafted in Japan, Mutech cartridges are built around R.M. Kanda’s distinctive yokeless ring magnet moving coil architecture. Unlike conventional iron-core moving coil designs, the yokeless structure is engineered to reduce magnetic resistance and improve electromagnetic efficiency, contributing to extremely low internal impedance, improved transient response, and unusually strong signal output for a moving coil cartridge.

One of the defining characteristics of Mutech cartridges is the way they combine speed and resolution with tonal body and musical energy. The presentation feels highly immediate and expressive, with exceptional transient realism through percussion, strings, vocals, and acoustic instruments. Bass remains agile and articulate, while the midrange carries impressive texture and harmonic density without sounding overly warm or coloured.

Mutech Product Range

Mutech’s cartridge range centres on handcrafted moving-coil designs that combine traditional Japanese craftsmanship with advanced yokeless ring-magnet technology developed by legendary designer Eiji Kanda. Models such as the Hayabusa and flagship Hayate feature ultra-low impedance generators, proprietary SS-ΞΌM core materials, boron cantilevers, and precision line-contact styli engineered for exceptional detail retrieval, tonal purity, and low distortion. Built in limited quantities and refined through decades of analogue expertise, Mutech cartridges are prized for their natural musicality, expansive soundstage, and remarkably transparent presentation.
