Description

M stands for Micro-line, the design of the nude diamond stylus tip used on this range of two cartridges, the ML (low output) and MH (high output).

In line with the Hana philosophy of offering highly musical cartridges at competitive prices, the ML and MH options are set to offer a great sound and great value for money.

Hana ML

Low Output Microline MC Cartridge 0.4mV

Low Output

Otherwise identical to the MH model, the high-purity copper wound coil in the ML delivers just 0.4mV per channel. The impedance is 8Ω and it is recommended to load it with an impedance of less than 100Ω.

Hana M-Series

The Hana M Series cartridge bodies are made from black polyoxymethylene (POM) which is a very hard, extremely rigid and very strong thermoplastic Excel using a particular formulation of POM manufactured by DuPont that sells under the trademarked name ‘Delrin’. Both cartridges have nude Microline styluses and aluminium cantilevers. The shape of the nude Microline stylus, mimics that of the cutting stylus used in the cutting lathe and therefore fits precisely into the vinyl groove.

Components

This enhanced tracking ability enables the Hana M Series cartridges to capture the most delicate musical details with better frequency resolution, channel balance and stereo imaging as well as lower distortion.’ Hana cartridge parts are manufactured for maximum performance and consistency then assembled by hand at the company’s facility in Yokohama, Japan. Several of the components used in the magnetic circuit including the front yoke, are cryogenically treated— a process Excel claims results in the creation of a more precise and controlled magnetic flux field that in turn enables greater linearity and more musical sound quality.

Why Choose Hana

Hana is a Japanese phono cartridge manufacturer that has rapidly become one of the most successful and widely respected moving coil cartridge brands in modern analogue audio. Produced by Excel Sound Corporation in Japan — a company with decades of cartridge manufacturing experience — Hana cartridges have earned a reputation for delivering genuine high-end analogue performance while remaining approachable, musically engaging, and exceptionally easy to enjoy long term.

What makes Hana particularly appealing is the way the brand captures much of what listeners love about analogue playback itself. Rather than sounding overly clinical or aggressively analytical, Hana cartridges present music with a slightly fuller tonal balance and a beautifully natural lower midrange character that gives vocals, strings, and acoustic instruments impressive body and realism. There is a warmth and flow to the presentation that many listeners associate with classic vinyl playback, while still preserving excellent detail retrieval, openness, and tracking performance.

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Hana cartridges have proven exceptionally rewarding across a broad range of turntables and systems because they consistently deliver a sound that feels inviting, spacious, and emotionally engaging without becoming fatiguing over longer listening sessions. Whether fitted to modern high-mass designs or more traditional suspended turntables, Hana cartridges tend to bring a sense of musical ease and analogue richness that encourages customers to spend more time listening to records rather than analysing equipment.

Signature Design and Sound

Handcrafted in Japan by Excel Sound Corporation, Hana cartridges are built using precision moving coil generator systems, carefully selected stylus profiles, and highly refined body materials designed to maximise resonance control and tracking stability. The company’s decades of manufacturing experience contribute to the consistency and reliability that have become hallmarks of the brand.

Sonically, Hana cartridges are known for their smoothness, tonal density, and highly cohesive musical presentation. The sound feels spacious and refined while retaining a pleasing sense of warmth and harmonic richness through the lower midrange and upper bass regions. Vocals sound intimate and natural, bass carries satisfying weight and texture, and high frequencies remain detailed without becoming sharp or overly forward.

Unlike some moving coil cartridges that prioritise ultimate speed and analysis above all else, Hana designs focus more heavily on musical communication and long-term listenability. This makes them particularly appealing for listeners seeking a cartridge that delivers refinement and detail while still preserving the inviting and immersive qualities many people seek from vinyl playback.

Hana Product Range

The Hana range includes a broad selection of moving coil cartridges across multiple performance levels, including the highly regarded E Series, S Series, M Series, and flagship Umami range. The cartridges are available in both low-output and high-output moving coil configurations, allowing compatibility across a wide range of tonearms, phono stages, and analogue systems.

Models including the Hana SL, ML, and Umami Blue have become especially respected for delivering exceptional musicality, tonal richness, and analogue realism relative to their price categories. As customers move further through the Hana range, improvements in stylus profile, body construction, and generator refinement contribute to greater transparency, spatial realism, and dynamic nuance while maintaining the smooth and highly engaging character the brand is known for.

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Geoff and his experienced analogue setup team provide careful cartridge installation, alignment, compliance matching, and phono stage optimisation to ensure Hana cartridges perform at their full potential within each customer’s vinyl playback system.
