Acoustic Suspension

First introduced in 1954, the acoustic suspension principle has long been regarded as the most accurate of all the loudspeaker designs available. Edgar Villchur and Henry Kloss worked together to bring the original AR-1, and several later models, including the well-known AR-3, to market. Several brands, including KLH, would adopt the acoustic suspension principle and use it in their loudspeakers designs for many years to come. This design principle dominated the speaker market well into the 1970s.

In an acoustic suspension design, the volume of air inside the enclosure serves as a cushion of air, or air spring, to provide a restoring force for the woofer cone. The air inside the enclosure essentially becomes the dominant part of the woofer’s suspension. Since the volume of air inside the enclosure is more linear than the mechanical parts of the woofer’s suspension, this enables the woofer’s diaphragm to move more linearly. This enables the driver to operate at higher excursions with less distortion than more traditional bass-reflex-type systems. Acoustic suspension systems are regarded all over the world for their greater accuracy, tighter bass transients, and exceptional bass resolution and texture.

Dedicated Midrange Driver

The KLH Model Five is a 3-way design featuring a dedicated midrange driver housed in its own internal enclosure. It’s the midrange driver’s responsibility to handle the most significant, middle part, of the audio spectrum. This portion of the audio band contains the vocal and musical instrument fundamentals which are most familiar to the human ear; and where accuracy, or inaccuracies, are most easily detected. In a three-way design, having a dedicated midrange means the driver can be optimized for this specific use since it doesn’t have the additional burden of reproducing lower & higher frequencies in the audio band. This results in truly remarkable clarity of vocals & instruments with less distortion.

Why Choose KLH

KLH is one of the great heritage names in American Hi-Fi, founded in 1957 by legendary audio designer Henry Kloss alongside Malcolm Low and Josef Hofmann in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before founding KLH, Henry Kloss had already helped shape the history of home audio through his work at Acoustic Research, where the acoustic suspension loudspeaker helped redefine what compact speakers were capable of achieving in domestic listening rooms.

Following KLH, Kloss would later go on to establish further iconic American audio companies including Advent Corporation and Tivoli Audio, cementing his reputation as one of the most influential figures in consumer audio history. That lineage gives KLH a degree of authenticity and historical significance rarely matched within modern loudspeaker manufacturing.

Today’s KLH revival has been handled with enormous respect for that heritage. Rather than simply borrowing vintage styling cues, the modern KLH range carefully recreates the spirit, balance, and musicality of the original designs while incorporating contemporary driver materials, crossover engineering, and cabinet refinement.

Signature Design and Sound

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, the KLH Model Five stands out as one of the most compelling modern interpretations of classic American Hi-Fi currently available. Visually, the speaker beautifully captures the proportions, linen grilles, walnut cabinetry, and understated elegance of the original era, yet beneath the retro exterior sits a thoroughly modern loudspeaker design.

The Model Five retains the acoustic suspension philosophy that made many classic American loudspeakers so admired for their controlled and natural bass performance. Combined with carefully engineered crossover networks and modern driver integration, the result is a presentation that feels rich, spacious, and highly musical without becoming slow or overly warm.

Sonically, the Model Five delivers a wonderfully relaxed and engaging listening experience. Vocals carry strong body and realism, instruments feel tonally natural, and the overall presentation encourages long listening sessions without fatigue. There is a scale and ease to the sound that works beautifully across jazz, classic rock, acoustic recordings, and vocals in particular.

Rather than chasing hyper-detail or analytical presentation, KLH speakers focus on musical communication, tonal balance, and recreating the emotional enjoyment that originally made home Hi-Fi such an exciting experience during the golden age of stereo listening.

KLH Product Range

The KLH range available through HeyNow Hi-Fi focuses on heritage-inspired loudspeakers that combine classic American Hi-Fi aesthetics with modern acoustic engineering and long-term listenability. The Model Five in particular has become highly regarded worldwide for delivering genuine high-end musical performance together with timeless industrial design.

At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Geoff and his experienced system setup team provide assistance with amplifier matching, room integration, speaker positioning, and complete system optimisation to ensure KLH speakers perform at their full potential within each customer’s listening environment.
