Chord Electronics is a British digital audio manufacturer renowned for producing some of the most technically ambitious and uniquely engineered DAC technology in high-end audio today. Designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom by founder John Franks and legendary digital designer Rob Watts, Chord products have developed a strong worldwide following through their highly individual approach to digital conversion, FPGA processing, and advanced filtering technologies.
What makes Chord Electronics particularly distinctive is that the company does not rely on conventional off-the-shelf DAC chipsets. Instead, Chord products are built around proprietary FPGA-based DAC architectures programmed directly by Rob Watts, allowing complete control over digital filtering, timing accuracy, interpolation, and transient reconstruction. This gives Chord Electronics products a very different design philosophy compared with many traditional DAC manufacturers.
At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Chord Electronics products appeal strongly to listeners seeking exceptional detail retrieval, speed, transparency, and spatial precision from digital playback. There is an immediacy and articulation to the presentation that can reveal extraordinary low-level information and dynamic nuance within high-resolution systems.
Signature Design and Sound
Manufactured in England, Chord Electronics DACs are built around proprietary FPGA processing platforms rather than commercially available DAC chips. Central to the company’s philosophy is Rob Watts’ extensive research into transient timing accuracy and digital filter design, leading to the development of Chord’s highly advanced WTA (Watts Transient Aligned) filtering technology.
Products including the Mojo 2, Hugo TT 2, DAVE, and M Scaler have become especially respected for their ability to reconstruct digital signals with remarkable timing precision and spatial accuracy. The M Scaler in particular operates as an advanced upscaling platform designed to dramatically increase interpolation performance before digital conversion occurs, contributing to improved image focus, depth layering, and overall realism when partnered with compatible Chord DACs.
Sonically, Chord Electronics products are known for their speed, transparency, and highly resolving presentation. The sound feels exceptionally clean and dynamically expressive, with impressive image precision and low-level detail retrieval. Within well-matched systems, Chord DACs can create an expansive and highly holographic soundstage with remarkable separation between instruments and vocals.
The Mojo 2 remains one of the most accessible entry points into the Chord philosophy, combining portability with genuinely high-end digital performance, while products such as the Hugo TT 2 and DAVE move further into reference-level digital playback territory.
Chord Electronics Product Range
The Chord Electronics range available through HeyNow Hi-Fi focuses primarily on DAC and digital playback technologies including the Mojo 2, Hugo TT 2, M Scaler, and selected flagship digital products including DAVE and BLU. Across the range, the emphasis remains firmly on proprietary digital processing, advanced FPGA design, and preserving timing integrity throughout the playback chain.
Chord Electronics products are particularly appealing for listeners seeking a highly revealing and technically sophisticated approach to digital music playback. Their unique engineering philosophy and strong focus on transient accuracy have helped establish the brand as one of the most recognised names in modern high-performance DAC design.
At HeyNow Hi-Fi, Geoff and his experienced system setup team provide assistance with digital system matching, streamer integration, DAC configuration, and optimisation to ensure Chord Electronics products perform at their full potential within each customer’s listening environment.

This DAC HP amp is exceptional. The 4 band equalizer can be shaped to suit any pair of high end headphones. Can leave the equalizer set to neutral if running a headphone curve through Roon. Incremental volume control will drive any headphones with ease. The colour coded buttons will challenge the colour blind, but once set up with favourite headphones the only thing you will adjust is volume
Superb sound even without using the EQ options .
I use it with my iPhone 13 & dd hifi cable - at first
there was no sound coming through with the dd hifi
cable , then I used my apple camera adapter dongle
which worked , then I tried the dd hifi cable again &
magically sound came through & its been working
perfectly for the past three days . Now I just have to
get to grips with the colour-coded settings .
Highly recommended
Fantastic budget option to get some Chord magic in your system. I’m using it as a desk-top DAC in my main system. Once you get the 3.5mm adapters sorted, this little gizmo - roughly the size of two boxes of matches - really shines. Now more aware that many use these as part of their main systems, Chord have cleverly adapted the Mojo2 to allow it to stay permanently connected to a power source if you so desire, without over-charging the battery. The colour-coded button functionality is also easy to learn after a couple of goes, making volume and EQ adjustments very straightforward in operation. I don’t use this a portable device so I can’t comment on its usage for that. Build quality is very solid, connections are nice and secure, manual is easy to follow. It’s a big thumbs up.
My first Chord Mojo failed after minimal use. The USB Charging port became loose and charging would be intermittent. Then I had battery issues. I upgraded to a Mojo 2. Used minimally currently as I am finding it a challenge to work out what all the coloured balls mean in terms of colour status etc. Never mind the advanced menus !! When I do use it together with my Meze Audio headphones I really like the sound.
The Mojo2 is a nice step up over the orginal Mojo which was already great. Improvements on all fronts and well worth the cost of upgrading to the new model.
Compact and very portable, this unit produces a quality sound. The only reason I went 4 stars rather than 5 is that the controls are very unusual and not that easy to use.
Really good imaging, soundstage, clarity, and a touch of organic sound. Definitely beats my other lower-priced portable DACs IFI Go-blue and Shanlin 5. Didn't get 5 stars because it's not shielded from RF interference from my mobile phone which is not good enough for a portable device since it's attached to my phone during use. No such issue with other DACs. The color light system is brilliant. Let me easily choose volume settings between IEM and tube amp use based on the color e.g. red for IEM, blue for tube amp.
A nice little box. Great sound when listening to headphone and better than my Schitt stack
Even better I get to used it as a DAC for my EL34 amp
Has transformed the clarity
Highly recommended
Great service and great price. Wasn’t sure it was worth the price. But boy oh boy what a sensational portable DAC/amp. It’s left my Dragonfly Cobalt for dead, no joke , it’s not even close. For only $400 or so more, the Mojo 2 sounds like a $10,000 better DAC, yes really……
I was about to sell my 64Audio U12T as I assumed they were poor IEM’s. No way !! They now sing and punch along beautifully with this DAC. NOW I see what man the fuss is about with the Mojo2. It’s the portable DAC to beat at this and even well above its price point.
This is my first experience with portable DAC/Headphone amps. While I have little to compare it to, I must admit to being blown away by the quality of the sound reproduction. Instrument separation is incredibly well defined, but never in a harsh or tiring way. Listening to a wide variety of music I'm struck by the stability of sound and the amazing lack of noise in the signal, which I honestly didn't expect from a device so small and compact (even though every review I read said much the same thing!).
As a piano player I particularly like the reproduction of classical piano music, with particular emphasis on little subtleties like the unique sound a sustain makes when half-peddled. I've listened to a lot of music over many years, but I've been able to hear things with the Mojo 2 that I've never clearly heard in recorded music before.
In summary this is a great bit of kit. It's easy to use, and a joy to listen to.
I've ad my Chord Mojo 2 for 4 days now. After burning it in for this amount of time (it definitely needs to as it was quite fatiguing at first), I am finding it a delight to listen to. I have Hifiman Arya headphones, Emotiva BasX amp (with jumpers removed, 12W, 32 Ohms) and my old Mac Book Air running Roon and solid silver RCA>3.5mm cable. Was previously using iFi Zen DAC v2, Earman TR-AMP and Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt and initially I thought the Zen DAC sounded better than the Mojo. But after listening closer to the Mojo 2, I realised that the Zen Dac was just brighter and forcing the music at me whereas the Mojo 2 effortlessly reveals details and dynamics with excellent sound stage, instrument layering and separation. Whilst I have heard technically better DAC's, the Mojo 2 offers a more musical presentation. I have yet to use it as a mobile DAC with my phone. I needed to install UAPP from Play Store the access full resolution of the DAC as Tidal failed to recognise it directly as a USB device.
Apart from the excellent musical presentation, the implementation of the DSP and crossfeed are a delight to use. I can easily configure EQ on the fly without needing to dig into a computers/phones EQ settings. I can just sit back, close my eyes and adjust the EQ even with my eyes shut. It's that simple once the button functions are learned.
Shame about the micro USB charging for backwards compatibility with the Poly, but apart from this, Chord has certainly created a masterpiece in DAC design, sound quality and most importantly....enjoyment. I have a past of listening with an analytical mind and actively seeking out the finest of details to find that euphoric rush hiding within the music. Somehow, the Mojo 2 allows me to maintain interest and attention with a sense of completeness, all in a sturdy metal box that is the size of a pack of cards.
